PROGRAM NOTE (Version for violin & piano)
The Celebrity Series of Boston commissioned Up, Up, and Up in 2002 for a recital by violinist Stefan Jackiw. As I was writing the piece, I noticed my own preference for rising melodic lines, and this title popped into my head. The words stuck, and the seemed appropriate for the commission, too; Jackiw, then 15, and currently enjoying a remarkable solo career, was (and still is) on the “up and up.”

The five epigrammatic movements of the piece form an arch, with a piece for violin alone at its keystone (fast–slow–solo–slow–fast).
