Control Room (2002)
flute, cello, and piano | 8 mins | MP3 | Score Commissioned by the New York Youth Chamber Music Program First Performed by Kathleen Brisotti, Gwendolyn Krosnick, and Elena Antimova 29 April 2003, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall
PROGRAM NOTE:
The title "Control Room" refers to a kind of musical multitasking. The piece tells four different stories simultaneously, switching between them much like the application of various camera angles during a televised football game. A longer, more stretched-out version of the form might take its cue from the simultaneous and overlapping events of a soap opera, or even of a comic book. As the composer, I act as the director, sitting in the control room and switching between stories -- but only at the most opportune times, making the cuts both smooth and coherent.
