SHABU SHABU was written in 2002 for flutists Thomas Robertello and then-student Rachel Ciraldo. Over the course of this short piece, the 'teacher' part is sometimes the leader, sometimes the supporter, and often on equal footing as the student part. The two lines interweave throughout, especially during the canon which begins and ends the piece. Shabu shabu is indeed a style of Japanese cooking, but I chose the title for its linguistic reflection, mirroring the imitative phrases of the piece.
