Students of Concordia Conservatory's Chamber Music Program will premiere ECHO SONG commissioned for them for this concert.
Having an inclusive chamber music program open to all instruments and abilities inevitably results a few unusual ensembles, and finding repertoire is a amusing challenge! Sometimes an arrangement of an existing piece does the trick, and in fact some short baroque pieces lend themselves quite cheerfully to flexible instrumentation. But by utilizing our composers (me!), we can combine students of roughly similar ability in sometimes oddball instrumentations. ECHO SONG, for example, is for three guitarists and piano four-hands!

The students of Concordia Conservatory's chamber music program will premiere a new song cycle of mine commissioned by the Conservatory with support from the ASCAP Foundation's Charles Kingsford Fund. The cycle includes ten song settings of poems by Karla Kuskin, Mary Britton Miller, Deborah Chandra, Carl Sandburg, Douglas Evans and Charlie Sohne. The texts weave a story of discovery and whimsy in the day of the life of a child: waking up, going to school, daydreaming, playing, and saying good night. Each instrumental and vocal part was tailored to the level of the student who will perform it, making the experience challenging, achievable, and fun!

Dal Suono Sommerso (From Submerged Sound) is dedicated to the diffusion and the production of new compositions, especially that of young composers, both in Italy and in other countries. Through a series of initiatives, and in particular through concerts, it explores alternative methods of diffusing the “Young Music,” individualizing new spaces for encounters with the public and creating a network of contacts that favors cultural exchange among different countries.

I am so proud of Concordia Conservatory's Chamber Music program. In addition to their regular lessons at the school, students have the opportunity to play chamber music with other students of similar ability. And when an oddball instrumentation bubbles to the surface, director Kathleen Suss turns to her composers to fill the bubbles. Both writing this music and coaching the ensembles are big, big fun.
